5 reasons why most sandals are ruining your feet
- And how to fix it
1. Poor arch support causes plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinitis.
Wearing sandals with inadequate arch support leads to plantar fasciitis (heel pain) and Achilles tendinitis (inflammation in the Achilles tendon). This is especially common when people wear sandals in which the back is the same height as the front.
2. Narrow footbeds cause bunions
Bunions are bony bumps that form at the base of the big toe as a direct result of inward pressure towards the second toe. They can be exacerbated by wearing sandals with narrow or tight toe boxes.
3. Poorly cushioned shoes can cause stress fractures.
Sandals with insufficient or no cushioning under the ball of the foot contribute to stress fractures as they offer no shock absorption for your feet while you walk.
4. Flat base sandals can cause hammer toes
This is where your toes stay permanently bent at the knuckle and you can’t straighten them out. Hammer toe arises from constantly gripping your toes to keep your shoes on (this is especially prevalent in flip flops when you are overcompensating for a lack of straps).
5. Lack of heel support can cause knee pain
Wearing sandals without any heel cushioning transfers the stress of walking directly to your knees, leading to pain and discomfort. Similarly, most sandas, especially cheap ones, lack any amount of arch support. If you walk a few miles, you’ll notice that your knees begin to compensate for this.
What your sandals should have:
- Arch support: Avoids plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinitis.
- Wide toe box: Allows room for your toes preventing bunions.
- Cushioned footbed: Shock observing abilities preventing stress fractures and other common injuries around ankle, knees and back.
- Raised toe bar: Puts the toes in a comfortable position, especially if you have hammer toes or a flat foot. Helps with slippage.
- Deep heel cup: gives stability preventing knee stress, can also help control pronation.
